ekaṃ samayaṃ āyasmā ca sāriputto āyasmā ca mahākoṭṭhiko bārāṇasiyaṃ
viharanti isipatane migadāye. atha kho āyasmā mahākoṭṭhiko sāyanhasamayaṃ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito yenāyasmā sāriputto tenupasaṅkami. upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā sāriputtena saddhiṃ sammodi. sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. ekamantaṃ nisinno kho āyasmā mahākoṭṭhiko āyasmantaṃ sāriputtaṃ etadavoca: kiṃ nu kho, āvuso sāriputta, cakkhu rūpānaṃ saṃyojanaṃ, rūpā cakkhussa saṃyojanaṃ ... mano dhammānaṃ saṃyojanaṃ, dhammā manassa saṃyojananti?

On one occasion, the Venerable Sāriputta and the Venerable Mahākoṭṭhika were dwelling at Bārāṇasī (Varanasi), in Isipatana, in the deer park. Then in the early evening, the Venerable Mahākoṭṭhika emerged from seclusion and approached the Venerable Sāriputta. Having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Venerable Sāriputta. Having concluded [their] polite and pleasant conversation, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the Venerable Mahākoṭṭhika said this to the Venerable Sāriputta: How is it, friend Sāriputta [that] the eye [is] the fetter of forms [or] forms [are] the fetter of the eye?...[Is] the mind the fetter of mental objects [or] mental objects [are] the fetter of the mind?
