evameva kho, bhikkhave, yato kho bhikkhuno chasu phassāyatanesu cittaṃ udujitaṃ hoti sudujitaṃ, ajjhattameva santiṭṭhati sannisīdati ekodi hoti samādhiyati.
seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, rañño vā rājamahāmattassa vā vīṇāya saddo
assutapubbo assa. so vīṇāya saddaṃ suṇeyya. so evaṃ vadeyya: ambho, kissa nu kho eso saddo evaṃrajanīyo evaṃkamanīyo evaṃmadanīyo evaṃmucchanīyo evaṃbandhanīyoti?

so taṃ vīṇaṃ dasadhā vā satadhā vā phāleyya. dasadhā vā satadhā vā taṃ phāletvā sakalikaṃ sakalikaṃ kareyya. sakalikaṃ sakalikaṃ karitvā agginā ḍaheyya. agginā ḍahitvā masiṃ kareyya. masiṃ karitvā mahāvāte vā opuneyya nadiyā vā sīghasotāya pavāheyya. so evaṃ vadeyya: asatī kirāyaṃ, bho, vīṇā nāma yathevayaṃ kiñci vīṇā nāma. ettha ca mahājano ativelaṃ pamatto palaḷitoti.

Suppose, monks, the sound of a lute would not [have been] heard before (lit: would be not heard before) by a king or the chief minister of a king. He would hear the sound of a lute. Hey, of what [is] this sound, [which is] so enticing, so desirable, so intoxicating, so enchanting, so captivating?
