SN 56.44 Kūṭāgārasutta

Yo hi, bhikkhave, evaṃ vadeyya, ‘Ahaṃ dukkhaṃ ariyasaccaṃ yathābhūtaṃ anabhisamecca ... dukkhanirodhagāminiṃ paṭipadaṃ ariyasaccaṃ yathābhūtaṃ anabhisamecca sammā dukkhass’antaṃ karissāmī’ti, n’etaṃ ṭhānaṃ vijjati.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, yo evaṃ vadeyya, ‘Ahaṃ kūṭāgārassa heṭṭhimaṃ

gharaṃ akaritvā uparimaṃ gharaṃ āropessāmī’ti, n’etaṃ ṭhānaṃ vijjati,

evameva kho, bhikkhave, yo evaṃ vadeyya, ‘Ahaṃ dukkhaṃ ariyasaccaṃ

yathābhūtaṃ anabhisamecca ... dukkhanirodhagāminiṃ paṭipadaṃ

ariyasaccaṃ yathābhūtaṃ anabhisamecca sammā dukkhassantaṃ karissāmī’ti, n’etaṃ ṭhānaṃ vijjati.

Just as, monks, one would say thus: ‘Not having built the lower level of a building with a peaked roof, I will raise the upper level’; this is not possible. Just so, monks, whoever would say thus: ‘Not completely understanding the noble truth of suffering as it truly is…not completely understanding the noble truth of the way leading to the cessation of suffering as it truly is, I will make an end of suffering’; this is not possible.
